Project Details
Special Olympics changes lives. Special Olympics Ireland is first and foremost a sports organisation for people with an intellectual disability, but it provides athletes with far more than the physical benefits of sport.
It’s about fun, friendships and team spirit; it’s about a feeling of belonging, and ultimately improving quality of life. Special Olympics changes lives in so many different ways.
Through sport, athletes develop both physically and emotionally, they make new friends, realise their dreams, and know they can fit in – Special Olympics enables them to achieve and win not only in sport but in life too.
Special Olympics Ireland currently has almost 11,000 registered athletes participating in 15 sports in 409 affiliated groups throughout the island of Ireland. These athletes are supported by their families and a team of 25,000 volunteers who give of their time to help out at sporting and fundraising events.
Please support Special Olympics Ireland so that we can continue to change the lives of people with learning disabilities.

42 years ago, through a vision born in her own backyard, Eunice Kennedy Shriver established Special Olympics - an organisation that would grow into a global movement and change the lives of millions. Today 3 million athletes in more than 180 countries around the world benefit from being involved with Special Olympics.
Special Olympics Ireland was founded in 1978. Over the past 32 years the organisation has grown significantly.
