€1,175 will cover the cost of providing training and livestock (goats!) to 10 farmers in this isolated and rural community in Northern Ghana....
To promote improved breed livestock as income generating activities & supporting farmers' access to markets
Activities
Train 1 farmer group in the importance of improved animal pens
Construct 1 demonstration animal pen.
Train 1 farmer group on early detection of animal ailment (bloat, diarrhoea, etc) and treatment using local materials (herbs, etc)
Link with Ministry of Agriculture for veterinary services
Provide 3 goats per person (1 billy & 2 nannies) for 10 beneficiaries.
This will benefit 10 farmers and their families – a total of 70 people.
Outcomes
Community members using small livestock to make compost to improve soil quality, increasing crop production to enable them to grow enough, better quality food to eat three meals a day for at least 9 months of the year.
Community members are less vulnerable to the effects of drought or flood through use of sustainable agriculture techniques.
Community members can pay for basic necessities such as medicines & school fees by selling livestock & establishing small businesses
Better skilled community leading its own development and lobbying government for services.
